TroveStreet® Wisdom: Engaging with volunteer driver programs

There are various nonprofit organizations, service clubs, and faith-based groups that have volunteers who take older adults to/from their appointments and errands. To find out if a volunteer program is available in your area, we recommend contacting organizations that serve older adults in your community, as well as a Rotary or Lions Club, and faith-based entities.

The York Jewish Community Center offers J Ride, a volunteer driving program that primarily serves the West York, York City, York Suburban, and Central York school districts.  The program costs $80 per year, which includes 3 rides per month.  Volunteer drivers accept the rides when they are able, so no ride is guaranteed. Using their own vehicle, volunteers transport to regular medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other essential appointments on a case-by-case basis, M-F 8 AM -4 PM. Riders must be at least 60 yrs. old and independently mobile with a walker or cane, can transfer in and out of the car by themselves, be of sound mind, be able to answer the phone when the driver calls, etc.
